Moringa oleifera Is Very Nutritious
The leaves are the most nutritious part of the plant, providing a significant source of B vitamins, vitamin C, provitamin A as well as beta-carotene, vitamin K, manganese, and protein. When compared with common foods particularly high in certain nutrients (per 100 g fresh weight) cooked Moringa leaves are considerable sources of these same nutrients. Some of the calcium in moringa leaves is bound as crystals of calcium oxalate though at levels 1/25th to 1/45th of that found in spinach, which is a negligible amount. The leaves can be cooked and used like spinach, and are commonly dried and crushed into a powder used in soups and sauces.

Moringa leaves are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals. One cup of fresh, chopped leaves approx. 21 grams contains:

- Protein: 2 grams
- Vitamin B6: 19% of the RDA
- Vitamin C: 12% of the RDA
- Iron: 11% of the RDA
- Riboflavin (B2): 11% of the RDA
- Vitamin A (from beta-carotene): 9% of the RDA
- Magnesium: 8% of the RDA
Moringa oleifera Is also Rich in Antioxidants
Antioxidants are compounds that act against free radicals in your body.
High levels of free radicals may cause oxidative stress, which is associated with chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Several antioxidant plant compounds have been found in the leaves of Moringa oleifera. In addition to vitamin C and beta-carotene, these include:
- Quercetin: This powerful antioxidant may help lower blood pressure.
- Chlorogenic acid: Also found in high amounts in coffee, chlorogenic acid may help moderate blood sugar levels after meals.
One study in women found that taking 1.5 teaspoons (7 grams) of moringa leaf powder every day for three months significantly increased blood antioxidant levels.
Weight Loss Benefits
Moringa is so rich in nutritional value, it can provide more calcium, vitamin A & C, and proteins than typical sources like carrots and milk. These health-enhancing minerals energize the body in a more regulated pattern, and curbs our need for junk food and cravings.
Moringa leaf has also been reported to positively affect those using it for water weight loss. It is suggested that this added bonus of consuming Moringa supplements could be due to the plant’s anti-inflammatory qualities.
